Gumusluk Area Guide

The small and rustic coastal resort of Gumusluk is one of the best-kept secrets in Turkey. Sitting on the Bodrum peninsula, mainstream travel magazines rarely talk about it, yet it boasts of an esteemed reputation with a slight touch of mystique.

Its unpretentious atmosphere is typical of the hedonistic lifestyle so often seen on the Bodrum peninsula. Hence it is a favourite destination for Turkish and international artists, celebrities and expats.

History of Gumusluk

Gumusluk used to be Myndos, and the remains of the ancient city lay underwater. Green hills covered with the typical olive groves of the Bodrum peninsula, lead to the coastline, and Rabbit Island, the famous historical landmark of the village. A walkway built by the legendary king of Halicarnassus led him to the island, so he could feed the rabbits inhabiting it.

When the days of kings and royalty were over, Gumusluk adopted a peaceful atmosphere as a simple fishing village. That ambience has carried itself through to current day but with a delightful twist. The seaside restaurants of Gumusluk have a countrywide reputation as the best place to eat fish and seafood on the Bodrum peninsula.

Wealthy executives, locals and Turkish celebrities staying in Bodrum, go to Gumusluk specifically to experience the alfresco seaside dining of budget and high-end dining establishments. Other than that, small cafes dotted on the hillside do a roaring trade especially at weekends when going out for Turkish brunch is a family affair.

Gumusluk Real Estate Market

Property for sale in Gumusluk is not as plentiful as other resorts because of its small size and limited construction areas, yet buyers soon discover that most properties have a fantastic sea view because of the elevated hillside positions.

Cool breezes twisting their way around those hillsides also alleviate hot temperatures of the dry summers, so many apartments and villas for sale in Gumusluk maintain a comfortable temperature.

When you buy property in Gumusluk, you are tapping into a nonconformist lifestyle. It is a quiet and unobtrusive life, leading a few expats to settle in the area. Much of daily life revolves around the seafront, but a regular bus service into neighbouring Yalikavak or nearby Bodrum town centre makes this location ideal for expats looking to tap into a laid back, slow pace of life.

Given its unique and secluded atmosphere, real estate in Gumusluk is surprisingly affordable, with budget apartments within the Koyunbaba district gaining much attention from first-time buyers. Getting closer to the centre, villas become more plentiful, especially those displaying the traditional stone architecture of the Bodrum Peninsula.

Getting There

Bodrum airport is a just one-hour drive away making it easy to get to Gumusluk from other countries, especially the UK. The airport has frequent flight schedules in summer run by many international airline carriers.

During winter, most locals use the domestic terminal of Bodrum to catch a connecting flight with Istanbul. Otherwise, Izmir and Dalaman airport are suitable alternatives. Gumusluk is also 40 minutes’ drive away from Bodrum town centre and the primary bus station connecting it with the rest of Turkey.

Finally, Gumusluk sits on the Aegean Bodrum peninsula, that is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Turkey. Yet its position, outside of the bustling town centre means locals enjoy peace, with all entertainment, shopping and travel amenities just a short drive away. If you are looking for a quaint, idyllic summer living retreat, Gumusluk will undoubtedly live up to your expectations.
